OHCHR Trains Police in Acholi Sub-region

The UN Human Rights Office in Uganda commenced a three-day human rights capacity building training for forty senior police officers from the districts of Nwoya, Omoro, Amuru, Lamwo and Pader- ASWA sub-region. The training is organised in partnership with the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) and the Uganda Police Force. It is the third of a series of three training sessions organised at the request of the Gulu Regional Police Commander in 2020.

The training sessions are on; the general introduction to human rights; international and regional human rights instruments and institutions; national, legal and institutional framework of human rights; ethics and professionalism; rules governing the use of firearms; prevention and the fight against torture; and respect for children’s and women’s rights. The training also focuses on fostering collaborative engagement and relationship with the Uganda Police Force and Media Professionals.

The Acting Gulu Regional Police Commander Superintendent of Police Stephen Kaija lauded the cooperation between the UN Human Rights Office and the Uganda Police Force in the protection and promotion of human rights in ASWA sub-region. “The interventions since 2020 have been very timely and effective and that thanks to that, there have been no major human rights incidents between the Police and the community during the electoral process in ASWA region.” The training is expected to contribute to upholding the highest standard of professionalism within the Uganda Police Force in the region. The training is part of the strategic engagement of the UN Human Rights Office and its partners countrywide to enhance ethics, professionalism and respect for human rights.  Similar training is underway with the Army and other security agencies in other regions of the country.
