Statement by OHCHR Uganda on the passing of Hon. Med S. K. Kaggwa, Chairperson Uganda Human Rights Commission

Kampala, 20 November 2019:- The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has learnt with the deepest sadness about the sudden passing this morning, of Hon. Med S.K. Kaggwa, Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC).

We have lost a true friend and a passionate and committed advocate for human rights. He dedicated his life to the protection and promotion of human rights in Uganda and on the African continent. His commitment and leadership were instrumental in ensuring strong partnerships with various stakeholders, including OHCHR.

Hon. Kaggwa played a crucial role in supporting the engagement by the Government of Uganda with international and regional human rights mechanisms, and in ensuring follow-up to these recommendations at the national level. Under his leadership, UHRC and OHCHR engaged in a wide range of joint human rights interventions, both in Kampala and up-country.

We wish to extend our deepest condolences to Hon. Kaggwa’s family and friends, as well as to the Commissioners and all staff of the Uganda Human Rights Commission.

We are honoured to have known and engaged with Hon. Kaggwa. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide us in the advancement of human rights. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
